AFSHAR RUNNER
3' 0" x 16' 0" (91 x 488cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Long runners woven in the 19th century by the Afshar tribespeople are very seldom found and highly sought after for their unique abstract folk artistry. This High-Decorative Afshar art rug features an inventive expression of the classic herati design. Here, the traditional diamonds are transformed into expressive, hooked Wheels of Life, symbolically important to the weavers, and are flanked by the complementary, slender, lancolate leaves drawn with graphic angularity. These medallions are widely spaced on a field of densely packed, kaleidoscopic rosettes and tiny tribal motifs. Stick-figure birds are embedded throughout the botanical wonderment and serve as real talismans of good fortune and embodiments of attributes such as freedom, fertility, and abundance. A complex array of meandering vine borders in several scales creates a dynamic and protective frame to the enchanting field.
