A refreshingly open composition of expressive peony and lotus blossoms along with gracefully curving fronds immediately captures the viewer’s eye in this striking nearly 150-year-old Sultanabad. The abundance of a garden in bloom is informed by the inimitable artistic sensibility transferred over the generations from the very earliest pieces. Its seldom-seen, spacious allover pattern is perfectly balanced as it flows in all directions as if into infinite space. Overscale botanical elements are augmented by an entrancing, primarily autumnal palette of warm rust reds, amber, delicate rose-coral, notes of glowing cerulean, with splashes of sea and golden greens. Expert abrash color shifts add distinction to the wonderfully textured field, creating a layered depth that allows the pattern to virtually hover above. A more condensed floral border on an umber ground aptly frames this handsome connoisseur’s carpet.
