This High-Collectible caliber, well over 150-year-old oversize carpet represents the quintessence of Persian Court style weaving during the first half of the 19th century. Inscribed in elegant calligraphy “Malek Baba” (meaning “Dearest Grandfather”), this virtually 13 x 20 piece was painstakingly woven by a veritable “dream team” of carpet designers and 8 to 9 master rug weavers, likely over a period of four to five years. The result is a work of awe-inspiring beauty, inimitably expressed with balance and harmony. It features a majestic design, a wealth of exquisite and rare dyes, including a profusion of prized Tyrian purple. It remarkably remains in heavy pile condition at close to two centuries of age. Its artistic splendor is furthered by the freeform nature of its pattern language, as its weavers were clearly given license to improvise on a grand scale.
