DOUBLE NICHE KAZAK, Southern Central Caucasian
4' 7" x 8' 0"
140cm x 244cm
Late 19th Century
("New Arrivals Gallery") Strikingly graphic and potently colored, this 130-140-year-old Kazak ingeniously combines powerful and whimsical motifs with a seldom-seen "Double Niche" medallion. On a variegated crimson field, the elongated twin-peaked centerpiece holds three compartments filled with small and miniature designs, including a weaver's comb. An impressive "crab" border and three fence patterns symbolically protecting the interior symbols. This extremely well-preserved antique tribal rug's energetic expression, rich palette of naturally dyed colors, endearing slight asymmetries, and intentional striations in the red and blue zones are all inherited nuances of a great weaving tradition. Note the intentionally misshapen tiny star at the very axis of the medallion.
