(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery")This singular example from the geometric end of Serapi carpets is quite inventive, offering a rarer early earth and sky palette, a squarish understated medallion that departs from this style’s weighted, powerful centerpiece, and instead of large palmettes and vinery in the spandrels, four house-like structures maintain an overall angular emphasis. Serapis are rarely this elemental in the drawing of the motifs, quite reminiscent of some Caucasian substyles, which makes this collectible rug very distinctive and answers to clients who will appreciate the simplicity of line and overall abstraction that this piece offers. A delightful constant spontaneous character of the drawing that can be seen by comparing right to left and up and down versions of each motif and the spirited expansion and contraction around the border.
