AGRA
4' 2" x 6' 3" (127 x 190cm) Late 19th C.
(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The historic Indian city of Agra, best known as the home of the Taj Mahal, has a long and illustrious tradition of rug weaving since the early 16th century. Deeply influenced by Persian designs and techniques, this adorable 130 to 140-year-old weaving takes a traditional all-over pattern and transforms it through pinpoint sampler-like design work and adroit use of unexpected colors. The field presents a phalanx of tiny ‘Seeds of Life’ (or ‘boteh’) and two types of birds, one with tail plumes and the other seemingly rendered in the Pointillism style. Creating wonderful chromatic textures, a palette of only four tonalities--vermillion, walnut, parchment, and rose quartz—articulate this intentional study in delicacy, meant to be appreciated at close range for its endearing character.
