KARABAGH RUNNER, Southwest Caucasian
3' 10" x 15' 1"
117cm x 460cm
Dated 1902
(High-Decorative) A striking, spaciously scaled Harshang all-over dragon flower is the defining motif of this arresting antique Caucasian Karabagh runner. Karabagh textile artisans located on the western foothills of the Caucasus Mountains wove very original decorative carpets combining influences from the Caucasian and sometimes European traditions. With 1902 inscribed in the upper border, it deviates from the deep colors of the Karabagh weaving heritage in its profoundly exotic earthy palette, where persimmon, butter yellow, guava and extremely subtle celadon accents play across a very uncommon walnut ground, creating an impressive, even modern, one-of-a-kind corridor carpet.
