Revealing his thorough exploration of the artistic movements throughout the 19th century in the formal weaving tradition, this carpet acquired from a significant Midwest private collector of Persian floral and court-inspired rugs is among the oldest and most innovative of its type. For lovers of early Persian rugs, this singular fascinating carpet offers undulating movement in its delicate lattice pattern through the alternating compression and expansion of the design – a difficult technique that only very seasoned weavers could accomplish successfully and here is masterfully executed. Also displayed in this early work is an alluring palette of 200-year-old natural dyes, the subtle tones such as the palest rose as true to their original as the deep jade greens. The emerging patina is absolutely magical as it emanates from the depth of the aged wool to gently shimmer through these many hues.
