("New Arrivals Gallery") This is an extraordinarily well-preserved member of a rug group whose very early examples are found primarily in museums. Identified early in its history as a one-in-the-world masterwork, at two centuries of age it still has even, moderate pile condition with some areas of moderate re-piling. Its varying, exotic blossoms shimmer with a deep patina. Seemingly capturing the overall lushness of the Khotan Oasis where it was made, it provides a striking contrast to the vast desert that surrounded it. Its artistry is subtle, beguiling the viewer who looks deeply. An orderly presentation of flowerheads belies quite expertly mixed groupings, with each pair or row never repeated exactly throughout the length of the rug.
