KARACHOV KAZAK
3' 8" x 6' 10" (112 x 208cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Created by Armenian or Azeri nomadic weavers in the 19th century, this painterly composition, adorned with age-old totemic graphics, has a tremendous presence as a distinctive rug from the Kazak repertoire of the southwest Caucasus realm, in the prized Karachov style. Two fiery carnelian cruciform medallions rest between quadruple ram's-horn emblems, each containing enigmatic latch-hooked forms accompanied by glittering “chessboard” diamonds. Technicolor animals, esoteric motifs and apotropaic ornamentation abound, intended to bestow the owner with good fortune. Its clouded azure blue field is extremely unusual and amplifies the charm and appeal of this piece. A virtuoso, invigorating abrash technique (purposeful color striations) yields countless individual variations that lend fascinating spontaneity, creating an intense artistic impact. The bold Star of Wisdom emblems in the resolved ivory main border make for an entirely successful and seldom seen picture frame. Its pile condition is outstanding, especially given its over one and a half centuries of age.
