Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This extremely well preserved, some 130-year-old Karaja piece is from the prolific Azerbaijan weaving area that produced Heriz, Serapi and Bakshaish carpets throughout the 19th century. It offers a very spirited and original design. The aesthetic from this region emphasizes strikingly large geometric medallions and pendants. Here, this piece from the Karaja village most known for its production of smaller area size rugs, comes their unique version of a geometric "sunburst" medallion. This idiosyncratic departure lends a singular tribal nature to this 8x11 rug that is prized by enthusiasts. Room-size Karaja carpets are extremely few and far between, and we vigilantly strive to offer examples of this wonderful tradition whenever excellent specimens become available.
