Twitter Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible) The 19th century artistic milieu in the Ferahan region was foremost exploratory. The area was heavily populated with Armenians who, through the centuries, had encountered an extraordinary range of weaving traditions. In this stellar, remarkably well-preserved 170-year-old example, evocative, overscale organic shapes in the field and borders are most reminiscent of 17th-century Kurdish rugs, the closest to a comparison with this deceptively erudite work. Confining the experiment to a handful of tonalities enhanced by a tight spectrum of browns, a brilliant background of striated aquamarine supports the allover exceptional delicate pattern of a tableau of overscale blossoms, fronds, and other stylized floral supporting motifs. The contrast between the depths of tonalities is soft, yet the overall inherent aliveness of the drawing is mesmerizing, the harmony and balance palpable.
