QUCHAN KURDISH RUNNER, Northwest Persian
3' 11" x 13' 0"
Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative) This singular antique Quchan Kurdish runner is filled with repeating hooked diamond Wheel of Life motifs, which are delightfully echoed in the border design. The variation of naturally dyed color in the diagonal bands of pale golds, coral reds, royal and midnight blues in the field imitates the spontaneous and surprising beauty of nature. The whimsical shift in border width, which occurs at the foot of the runner is common in 19th century village weavings, as the weavers create the carpet improvisationally from an image in their mind rather than from a drawing.
