7' 5" x 11' 0" (226cm x 335cm) Late 19th Century
Even within the vigorous aesthetic of the Bijar tradition, this outstanding late 19th century example excels in the special potency of its saturated jewel colors, balanced majestic design and resplendent, lanolin-rich wool quality. Its open reserve of shimmering, emphatically abrashed carnelian red and expansive, floating medallion add a dimensionality that brings even greater presence. In addition to its large scale anchor pendants traditional to the style, a creatively modified Herati pattern is very attentively rendered with expert juxtaposition of light and dark zones. Nuanced abrash continues within these painstakingly patterned sections, introducing artfully shifting cobalt to aquamarine to even the narrowest outlines.
