Preserved in remarkably good condition for its very great age of over 140 years is this brilliant rendition of the Chi Chi’s rare butterfly design. Alone memorable for its glowing ivory ground tone used in lieu of the typical blue or red, the drawing is particularly playful, revealing astounding expertise in balancing the constantly changing iteration of its several main motifs. Delicate tree forms ascend both sides of the field for added magic. The border also exudes a carefree spirit as its repeating stylized flowers bob and weave around the field. It is this kind of artistic control, appearing to be so casual, that is deeply cherished by collectors. Potent yet harmonious celadon, crimson and sapphire blue hues exert an almost magnetic intensity within this elemental vocabulary.
