(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery")An esoteric combination of geometric designs is shrewdly assembled in the field of this meticulously crafted Caucasian Shirvan rug. Four Memling Guls occupy the implied quadrants of the field, with a delicate sea-green abrash (artistic color striation) highlighting their crenelated edges. Descending along the rug’s vertical axis are three ivory medallions with a distinct Surahani look; each one featuring an assortment of playfully improvised flower heads and S motifs that are echoed in the external periphery of the field. The collected designs found in the field affirm this piece’s Shirvan status, while the Kufic border and carnation secondary border suggest it is a creative combination of northern Kuba designs.
