KURDISH BIJAR, Northwest Persian
4' 7" x 6' 3"
Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative) This handsomely spacious Kurdish Bijar rug exhibits an alluring over scale design within its main field. The implied immensity of the pattern is reinforced by the border overlapping the larger medallions and displaying them against their own ornate motifs. Set against a masterfully dyed rich indigo background, the floral patterns and vinery radiate upwards, further refined through a masterful use of abrash (artistic color striation) by an adroit weaver. Within the primary border there is a nuanced balance as well; the top and bottom horizontal strips contain a more curvilinear samovar design, and an increased level of ornamentation, while the vertical strips feature a higher degree of open space and a deconstructed samovar pattern.
