(Connoisseur-Caliber)
(“Fall/Winter 2019 Print Catalog”) Though 19th-century Caucasian rugs of distinction are always a fortuitous item to encounter, this 150-year-old Baku is extraordinary, as camelhair, seen here in the base of the medallion, was virtually never used and is intensely desirable by connoisseurs. The brilliant coupling of golden camelhair and aged brick red is an inspired departure from the Baku style’s traditional reliance on deep red and blues. Quintessentially Caucasian in its stunning display of native symbols, this rug offers the ashik icon repeated in the medallion, superbly rendered interlocking crab motifs in the border, and Wheel of Life patterns sprinkled in the field. At 140-years-old, this exquisite tribal rug is in extremely good condition.
