("New Arrivals Gallery") An early, most inventive Caucasian, this is an extraordinary, virtually 200-year-old rug that offers a window into this renowned artistic tradition from the region’s lowlands. An elongated diamond and pendants vertically command the field. This shape eventually developed into a multi-faceted, layered ornament that was repeated several times down the center of Shirvan rugs, becoming a signature motif from the area. Here, its elemental progenitor holds a large, complex, royal blue-niched medallion. Tiny floating, crystal clear, enigmatic tribal symbols fill the field. No less than eight exquisitely crafted borders add an awe-inspiring order and complexity. Its even medium pile condition despite its tremendous age is another virtue.
