BAKSHAISH CAMELHAIR, Northwest Persian
3' 5" x 5' 9"
(Connoisseur-Caliber) (“Fall/Winter 2019 Print Catalog”) With originality, combining a powerful design and earthy tones of the natural camelhair background, this antique area size piece creates a riveting totemic visage. An expanded diamond latticework, anchored by butterfly shapes and enclosing multilayered rosettes, conveys the sense of continuing beyond the borders. The naturally occurring striation of camelhair brilliantly adds a three-dimensional effect. Striations within the carnelian red imbue an undulating character while spruce greens and aubergines add evocative faceting. The Bakshaish villages wove very few area rugs compared to their numbers of room sizes, attributing a special value to expressive pieces still in very good condition such as this.
