This ingenious rendition of the medallion-on-an-open-field design immortalized in the town of Bijar boasts particularly crisp stylized drawing and a brilliant color combination of carnelian red and robin’s egg blue. Its ornamented spaces present a winsome shrub repeat that predates the more predicable Herati pattern established at the turn of the 20th century. The old Azerbaijan favorite iris border design appears here, drawn with delightful improvisation. Subtle desert rose, teal, garnet, lilac, and celadon tones add an engaging whimsy. Happily, this small room size is in heavier pile condition with an incredibly sturdy foundation at 140 years of age.
