AFSHAN SHIRVAN, Southeast Caucasian
3' 8" x 5' 0"
Late 19th Century
("New Arrivals Gallery") This highly inventive Caucasian Shirvan woven in the later 1800s adds elements from the nearby Perpedil and Afshan Kuba designs with a Kufic border motif, rendered in stunning clarity. The softened rosy terra cotta ground contrasts delightfully with soft sky blues. The marked color shift at the top from rich brick red to a subtle apricot is an intentional variation of color-shading by the weaver, conveying a sense of the asymmetrical and ever-changing beauty of nature. This 125-year-old rug is in wonderful, heavier pile condition. (INQUIRE ABOUT THIS RUG AT CLAREMONT 2, 1-800-883-1815)
