This delightfully energetic rug offers a generous display of Caucasian artistry. On a continually striated reserve of illuminated aquamarine, cobalt and azure blues float three naïve linked medallions, each drawn entirely freehand in outline and proportion. Around them, a rich tapestry of flashing coin shapes, unusually deconstructed and creatively colored, many with a single star motif, fill the remainder of the reserve. This amazing, inventive field is framed with the often-used chalice and oakleaf border design. As with other deeply personal tribal weavings, tiny diamond ornaments are scattered along the edges, imparting a sense of spontaneity and asymmetry to the design. The age cartouche at the top of its field has one number missing, but is likely 1291 AH (1873 AD). Happily, at about 150 years old, this fascinating rug is in wonderful heavier pile condition,
