At over one-and-one-half-centuries-old, this Caucasian Shirvan is the consummately crafted masterwork of an incredibly accomplished weaver. Featuring a virtuoso presentation of the ascending stepped diamond medallion pattern that is the trademark of its type, within each mandala is an individualistic ivory shield lozenge. The glowing midnight indigo-based field contains orderly tribal devices including elemental ‘Tree of Life’ motifs and bold, crisply drawn snowflake medallions. In dexterously balanced juxtaposition, the main border introduces complex interlocked, jigsaw-like shapes in exotic hues including burgundy, aubergine, celadon and sapphire that appear to circumambulate the more structured inner universe within the field. Look closely at each bottom corner of the main border to reveal fanciful zoomorphic figures. All in all, this lovingly maintained piece achieves great artistic mastery and technical prowess.
