(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery")What a delightfully folkloric rug this is, woven in the high reaches of the fabled Caucasus Mountain, its maker clearly amazingly energetic and tremendously skilled. The village of Karachov is associated with the axis of alternating anvils and box motifs, but the unrelenting playfulness and spontaneity in the field around these traditional elements are quite special. Wheels of Life at the top and bottom of the field embrace figures of a Caucasian man and women in fully articulated clothing, a pair of horses, numerous fertility symbols, and a prayer niche at each end. Could this be a carpet celebrating a marriage? Surrounding the beautifully striated teal blue field is a wide ivory border filled with a colorfully rendered “crab” motif. Still, in superb condition, this piece is an excellent example for the joie d vivre for which Caucasian rugs are coveted. Learn About This Rug Type
