NORTHWEST AZERBAIJAN RUNNER
3' 7" x 10' 3" (109 x 312cm) Late 19th C.
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery")The nomadic tribes inhabiting the Azerbaijan region of Northwest Persian in the 19th century were known to their virtuoso, fanciful woven art. What we use as a floor covering for a short passageway, the weaver of this runner obviously saw as the opportunity to create a masterful artistic expression. Here the favorite nomadic symbol, the boteh or sprouting seed, is presented over 100 times, never exactly repeating while the ground tone itself shifts from blue to taupe, then to indigo, ending at the top in java brown. The diagonal striped main border, a feat few weavers attempt, ingeniously supports the various colors in the field and lends an upward radiating sense that is delicately balanced by a flower and leaf patterning at the sides. Unbelievably still offering heavier pile condition, this art piece is destined to be a personal treasure for its next owner.
