(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery")This supremely elegant corridor carpet or “kelege” is an extraordinary example of the great magnitude of elegance and craftsmanship that camelhair carpets from the Serab region occasionally achieved in the 19th century. The sharply rendered, stylized palmette latticework that fills the field, unique to this area, utilizes a pairing of camelhair with undyed ivory sheep’s wool to create the most delicate of contrasts, giving it an almost damask effect. Dramatically floating on this patterning and framing it are a teardrop medallion, spandrels, and series of borders in a kaleidoscopic palette of color that sets off the generous areas of camel hair. The grand outer golden border is adorned with a series of elaborate, flower-studded boteh (paisley) motifs that belie its tribal origins. Clearly treasured throughout its history, it remains in remarkable, heavy-pile condition. Learn About This Rug Type
