The inhabitants of the Karadagh region belonged to various nomadic and semi-nomadic groups that drew from a variety of cultural and artistic traditions, which gave its artists free-reign to reinvent a cornucopia of designs. This entrancing, highly individual rug seamlessly introduces a number of utterly fascinating cross-cultural motifs. For instance, the emblem in the upper field is reminiscent of a Caucasian Sewan Kazak medallion, while the two lower mandalas reflect Persian Karaja influence. The beautifully rendered, archetypical ivory ‘crab’ main border from the Karabagh-Chonderesk region augments its evocative, enigmatic tribal ambiance.
