ISFAHAN VASE RUG, Central Persian

Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This venerable example of Isfahan weaving offers a glorious rendition of the cherished ‘Vase’ motif. This famed city’s floral rug tradition did not continue to match the production of other court weaving centers in the 19th century, so vegetally dyed 120-year-old or more examples are much less available. Revealing an extremely wide range of color and meticulously rendered design details for which Isfahans are renowned, this rug’s drawing coalesces into a depiction of a paradisiacal garden, filled with magic and the charm of the exotic. A lyrically drawn rubescent vase spouts lush, crystalline foliage in a joyous rainbow of garnet, sapphire, rose, celadon, spruce green and notes of persimmon while a pair of gracefully intertwined ’Trees of Life’ stretch toward the sheltering sky.
