(High-Collectible) The ancient Turkoman tribes from the Central Asian steppes created alluring ruddy-toned carpets of allover, mesmerizing, exotically drawn repeated motifs, exemplified by this rug from the semi-pastoral Chodor (Chowdur) tribe. Very few of their 19th-century weavings are still in existence and this rare, extremely early example offers their preferred rich mulberry-walnut hued ground supporting tranquilly rhythmic repetitions of their signature ‘Ertmen guls'. Each in turn comprises a fascinating secondary pattern of diagonal rows alternating from warm madder red to ivory. Precious, sparingly used shades of blue range throughout from bright azure and lapis to rich cobalt and deep indigo. Vertical border motifs contain a tremendous degree of subtle variances that would bring years of enraptured discovery. Made not just for artistry and identity but constructed to withstand the rigors of tribal life and is still in heavier pile condition.
