MOHTASHAM KASHAN, Central Persian
4' 6" x 6' 8"
137cm x 203cm
Circa 1850
(High-Collectible) ("Best-of-its-Type Sold in 2020”) A quite early provenance of approximately 170 years of age is instantly recognizable in the exploratory use of space, virtuoso color combining, and original design seen in this exceptional rug. Eschewing spandrels, its medallion touches all four sides of the field with a prominent yet well-integrated centerpiece. Soft base tones of celadon in the field merging with the alabaster border creates a rarely seen continuity that sets this rug apart as it gives emphasis to the poetry in the cartouches along the edge. Dexterous handling of ethereal soft pastels alongside potent jewel tones greatly intensifies this impact, presaging this use of color saturation that distinguishes the Mohtasham tradition from all other formal Persian styles. This masterpiece’s drawing is so effusive that it virtually hides four well-articulated birds in the corners and displays a beguiling panoply of botanical species. Learn About This Rug Type
