SULTANABAD, West Central Persian
8' 10" x 11' 10"
269cm x 361cm
Late 19th Century
This exemplary 19th-century Sultanabad offers an elegantly balanced and fluid overall design employing several scales of well-spaced flower heads to create its remarkable, quite intriguing visage. Chromatically distinctive with the use of rich jewel tones and sonorous earthy shades on an ivory field, this prismatic display is framed by a rust-red border using a condensed palmette and vinery pattern to complement the interior spaciousness. The inspired, deftly hidden field design is based on an hourglass described by branches that gather at the green leaf motif in the center, ascending and descending outwardly from there. Offering a symphonic palette of tonalities for which this style is perennially popular, it generously includes copper red, blue opal, spruce, cocoa, and tea rose.
