("New Arrivals Gallery") This enigmatic rug is an authentic artifact woven somewhere in Persian Azerbaijan by the pastoral nomadic Shahsavan tribe. Offering an unusual color palette with tones of coleus reds, fawn, auburn and copper, its ambiance is tremendously earthy. The evocative cruciform symbol repeated in the field 18 times is not part of the Trans-Caucasian lexicon, yet is drawn here with a sense of connection to its meaning. It is closest to a motif referred to as Wolf’s paw and is used in tribal rugs to ward off this shepherd’s enemy. The simple floret main border and carnation meander flanking borders are also seen on Caucasian Kazaks. This unique piece is in extremely good condition at six score years of age.
