("New Arrivals Gallery") The nomadic Qashqai people possess a history and culture rich in both struggle and inspiration. The combination of these two elements gives their best 19th-century rugs their unusual sense of density and aliveness. This is a magnificent offering of the more rarely seen 3-medallion Qashqai pattern, here introducing a connecting architecture that helps to order the multitudinous field ornamentation, much in the same way that the Qashqai’s traditional social structure maintained its hundreds of thousands of members. Every conceivable space is filled with an exceptional variety of abstract flowerheads, folkloric animals, mythical birds, magical charms, and enigmatic geometry. The boteh chains flanking the field flow from top to bottom in sync with the “slower” zig-zag leaf border, capturing a sense of endless circumambulation around the field. This masterwork is also endowed with a phenomenal wool quality that absolutely shines.
