KERMANSHAH, Western Persian
4' 4" x 6' 3"
132cm x 190cm
Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative)
Meticulously created in the city of Kermanshah, along with one of the expanded western silk routes, this glorious example presents a regal aesthetic and is a breathtaking representative of the tremendous visual depth and exceedingly fine weave. Its markedly graphic, stained glass visual paradigm is a chiseled garden theme, with its lush botanical elements carefully folded and tucked into every niche around an elaborated quatrefoil central medallion. A dazzling assortment of saturated colors includes lilac, glowing persimmon, burnished bronze, raspberry, and scintillating cerulean. The flower-strewn border suite provides a most elegant framing, with skillful chiaroscuro outlining engendering a sense of visual depth in the ivory primary band. Still in fabulous condition at 130-140 years old, its light patina attests to the cherished status it held among its previous owners and enhances the visual feast.
