TRIPLE MEDALLION KAZAK
5' 6" x 8' 9" (168 x 267cm) Dated 1899
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Woven by pastoral nomads who lived in the upper reaches of the Caucasus Mountains, this dynamic Kazak rug reflects its free-spirited, artistic aesthetic still fresh and inventive even across the cusp of the 20th century. In a visionary departure from this tradition’s typical palette, here a deep crimson ground is supported by exotic tones of apricot, cornflower and snowy jade, skillfully abrashed with purposeful striations for greater visual texture. This lively, innovative spirit is further explored through a change in the typically equal-sized medallions to a smaller central one, allowing the top and bottom ones to take on even more powerful dimensions. Latchhooks, ram’s horns, stars, the incoming arrows symbol, and protection icons add to this spontaneity, infusing the composition with playful energy. With enigmatic S-glyph and diamond inclusions, its innovative ‘leaf and calyx’ border form symbolic Mountains.
