(Connoisseur-Caliber)
Woven by nomadic peoples of the Moghan plain in the southeastern Caucasus region almost 150 years ago, this delightfully inventive, lovingly preserved tribal rug is a must-have acquisition for ardent Caucasian collectors and demonstrates a mastery of scale and age-old dyeing practices. The naturally derived palette exhibits a luminescent azure and glowing sunset colors with liberal usage of Tyrian purple, a precious dyestuff only available from the eastern Mediterranean coast of the Levant. More generally found within a connected latticework, this expressive piece brandishes an octet of unengaged hexagonal Memling ‘guls’ (or ‘flowers’ in the Farsi language) that drift downward on a glittering ivory starfield, imbuing a marked sense of movement within the piece. Its border features a magnificently abstract rosette device on a saffron base, uncommon in this type and more often found in rugs within the Gendje orbit.
