Woven in the mountainous region of Northwest Persia renowned for its imaginative, elemental rugs, this one-of-a-kind camelhair carpet creates a deeply compelling aesthetic. Its never-before-seen field design presents evocative tulips, cloud band-like tendrils, and flowerheads from the Azerbaijan 18th century lexicon, with a fineness of line and exquisitely ordered presentation associated with Turkomen tribal weaving. This combination of aesthetic sensibilities is borne out in the partial Central Asian genealogy of the people from this area. Imbued with subtle asymmetries, this room-size rug’s totally uncommon use of a similar chromatic value in the field and border is mesmerizing. Colors of the sky, sea and surrounding terrestrial landscape are reflected in this earthy rug. Its wonderful condition at nearly 150 years of age is another marvel to behold. (Note that teal-based guard stripes have been reduced at both fringe ends).
