SERAPI HERIZ, Northwest Persian
7' 11" x 11' 10"
241cm x 361cm
This prime example from the Second Golden Age of Weaving fully illustrates the creativity and inspired improvisation still alive in northwest Persian weaving while elsewhere, the "Revival Period" was taking its toll on eons-old rug traditions. Reflecting the Azerbaijan ability to create, as a team, memorable designs from a mere sketch, an astonishing level of conceptual synchronization is achieved in this room-size carpet, balancing both great spontaneity and an overall harmony. Its visionary, tree-themed field pattern is transformative, from the misty sky blue central precinct and elemental fledgling 'Trees of Life' presented on an undyed ivory base, to a fruitful arboreal extension throughout the reserve and golden corner spandrels. Figural devotees raise their arms in celebration. A unique primary border is filled with surprises, its completely novel pattern flowing atop a luminescent blue ground of shifting blue tones.
