QASHQAI SHISHBOLUKI, Southwest Persian
5' 2" x 8' 3"
157cm x 251cm
The storied history of the Qashqai nomads of Southern Persia is filled with the richness of experience derived from the struggles and inspiration of traveling generation-after-generation between their winter and summer pastureland. The painstaking effort and ambition to achieve their famously fine weave with pinpoint graphic detailing infuses this luxuriant rug with a palpable sense of spontaneity and aliveness. In this over 5x8 piece, the traditional medallion and stepped corner piece format of the Shishboluki subtribe is dramatically enlivened by virtually countless geometric ornaments, each richly faceted in complementary hues. Be sure to note that in each of the lava red corner spandrels, vertical halves of the Qashqai logographic medallion are reflected. Its nuanced detailing exemplifies the tremendous artistic innovation of expert weavers, who also wove into the rug an assortment of life-affirming semiotical embellishments.
