BIJAR CAMELHAIR, Northwest Persian

("New Arrivals Gallery") Originating from the famed weaving center of Bijar, this luminous, rare camelhair carpet is the result of Kurdish color creation and combining. From the tradition of double-wefted, heavy wool foundations that earned the moniker "Iron Rug of Persia", this Bijar presents a luxurious, mocha-toned camel's hair field, creating a sense of depth through exquisitely rendered color striation. At its heart, a sculpted stepped medallion contains a splendid galaxy of gently compressed, botanical elements with captivating arrangements of jade green leaves, salmon-hued rosettes, and ivory flower heads. The saffron-based ground of the spectacular conjoined spandrels glowingly showcases the "guli farang" or foreign flower, the European cabbage rose motif that so enamored Persian weavers. This stately room-size carpet remains in very good condition at over 140 years.
