3rd Quarter, 19th Century
("New Arrivals Gallery") With a unique visual appeal, this Seichur Kuba's entirely original pattern exemplifies the adventurous, experimental spirit of the finest 19th-century Caucasian weavers. Although it may appear repetitive at first glance, closer examination reveals unbroken invention throughout its rhythmic composition. The honeycomb lattice of octagons encloses elemental 'Wheels of Life,' deftly mimicking the 90-degree angles that characterize kelim or flatwoven rugs. Connecting each octagon are rectangles where constantly spontaneous filling occurs for the personal enjoyment of the viewer. As each row appears to continue into the realm beyond the border frame, nooks are created displaying various spontaneously conceived motifs such as insouciant pinwheels, spouted water jugs, and boteh seeds. Displaying expert dye work, a spectrum of sophisticated hues reveals an extraordinary command of color-combining.
