Many rug scholars consider the Laver Kirman tradition of the last 500 years, exemplified by this transcendent piece, to be the most beautiful of all Oriental styles for its sublime visual delicacy, incredible font of mesmerizing designs, and extreme clarity of weave. Here an entirely original format begins with three horizontal rows of singular multi-medallions, two entering the field from the top and bottom. Cypress tree motifs appearing in foursomes in each quadrant of the field are brilliant inventions for this carpet alone. The dramatic change in scale presented by the blanket of minuscule florets covering the field is pure Laver Kirman sensitivity. Adding additional quiet splendor to this very well-preserved 170-year-old piece, a rich array of sophisticated borders frame this unique field pattern.
