("New Arrivals Gallery") In this admirably naive folk artwork, a cascade of geometrical motifs descends the warm, softly ‘abrashed’ (artistically striated) camel-brown field. Large stepped “flowerheads” are also possibly symbolic clouds, facing off over loosely chained diamonds and a spontaneous formation of esoteric florets. Below, three riders levitate over their mounts between rows of flashy, stylized blossoms. The main border is composed of diagonal polychrome bands embossed with diamonds that “resolve” at each corner for an uninterrupted pattern showcasing the innate skill of the 19th-century nomadic weaver. An undyed outermost camel margin edges the perimeter and unifies the harmonious whole. Almost unprecedented for a rug that was intended to be a utilitarian item for the peripatetic people who created it, this wonderfully archaic-looking piece is in excellent heavy pile condition. Its versatile size allows for numerous applications around the home, even as thought-provoking art for the wall.
