MAHAJIRAN SAROUK, West Central Persian

("New Arrivals Gallery") This narrow mat-sized Mahajiran may well have been woven in the home of a weaver whose day job was creating room-size Sarouk carpets as it reveals a personal ambiance within its design. Offering an original field pattern, the drawing is tremendously expressive as vases tilt and the central flower presents a slightly organic shape. The rug's spectrum of color offers the deepest of midnight indigo fields and scintillating accent tones. Large-scale burgundy blossoms encircle a platinum blue central starflower, each dappled with hues lapis, pastel peach, with olive and jungle green. The two vessels at each end sprout diminutive crystalline buds to larger softly drawn polychrome poppies. Great 'floating' urns are partially revealed along each side with lyrically drawn stemmed flowers gently leaning toward the center. Lustrous, lanolin-rich wool intensifies the luminosity of this heavy-piled rug's surface.
