("New Arrivals Gallery") The Mahajiran Sarouk style, with its spaciously presented botanical displays, emerged around 1900 as the direct descendant of the Ferahan Sarouk tradition. The first Mahajirans, such as this entrancing, singular carpet, reveal the influence of the Ferahan aesthetic, with its deeply dyed colors and dramatic themes. Here, a one-of-a-kind design places both exquisitely-elaborated cypress trees and flower-filled vases at the edge of the carpet extending across the French blue border onto the field. A flotilla of elaborate, bejeweled motifs floats on a background of sonorous midnight indigo, lapis, and sapphire striations. The luxuriant lamb's wool, a Mahajiran trademark, illuminates the entire composition. Happily, this extraordinary rug remains in heavier pile condition.
