Late 19th Century
("New Arrivals Gallery") Enthrallingly stylized, this robust 130-year-old Serapi is a wonderfully original re-invention of a celebrated style. It's robust naturally derived color, crystal clarity, and splendiferous scale yield an irrepressible energetic spirit. It sports an exploded version of a classic medallion form, where each petal and abstract floral element slowly drifts from the center of gravity where a tiny cross is ensconced. The shimmering sapphire of the oversized yet well-proportioned medallion fluidly contrasts to the glowing golden sand reserve that in turn effortlessly engages with the striated, richly hued carnelian of the spandrels; all emit a glow particular to the high-quality wool used in its construction. Aesthetically testifying to a precious sensitivity, now almost entirely lost, for creating visual harmony through balancing powerful and delicate elements, this compelling piece has medium pile and minor, well-executed restorations.
