(High-Collectible)
("Featured in our new print catalog") This riveting piece is from a lineage of extraordinary weavers in Kashan who, for at least five decades in the 19th century, developed a distinctive, classical central medallion rug design. It combined ultra fine knotting, downy lambswool softness, and tenderly drawn botanical displays that magically mesmerize the viewer. As reflected in this piece, the best, earliest examples also offered a primary palette of superbly nuanced hues usually seen in rugs as tertiary tones because of their difficulty to capture. Its overall visual rhythm was masterfully planned. It exhibits a balance of forms in varying scales synchronized with an elegant spaciousness that brilliantly coexists with the subtle spontaneity found in every motif. Shimmering, unrivaled Mohtasham wool quality profoundly illumines the delicate palette. Exceptionally difficult to render, outside-the-box hues of guava, electrum, French vermilion, and frosted rose are only a sampling of the shades present. The unique vinery in the primary border is evocative of the Celestial Dragon’s energy as is often stylized in antique Persian rugs. There is something architectural about this piece that is evocative of a sacred building, its eloquent compositional integration creating a palpably balanced cohesion that takes tremendous command to execute. Exquisite condition redoubles the impact of this extraordinary gem.
