KARAJA, Northwest Persian
4' 8" x 6' 2" Circa 1900 Price: $12,000
(High-Decorative)
A tribal spirit is admirably captured in the highly geometricized medallions of this northwest Persian Karaja rug. A graphic hooked ivory medallion adorns the center, while the chiseled emerald stars add welcome balance. The broad-scale range in the surrealistic flowers and foliage excites the senses and invigorates the ginger red field. A full complement of cheery colors dazzles with sapphire, olive, aged coral, sky blue, illuminated by ivory contrasts. The freeform quality of its jazzy border is apparent, with exuberant innovation on a traditional pattern now transformed into a festive neon night display against a soothing midnight ground. Woven just before the standardizing impact of the commercially driven market, it remains in very good medium pile condition with an extremely durable foundation.
