(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The Serapi tradition contributed to Persian weaving powerfully scaled medallions, an expertly rendered spaciousness, and a visually splendid palette. We rarely get to experience such a peerless symphonic display of large-scale, stylized botanical magnificence and wondrous colors as in this premier representative. With its luminous, sea green orb-like medallion to the immense sculpted polychrome pendants and the fern-like appendages in the four corners, the garden allusions are dream-like, artistically compelling, and unique. Every bold element reflects individual treatment by the weavers, who were supremely confident in their innate sense of skillful abstraction from nature. A shimmering burnished gold main band adroitly encapsulates the fantasy of the field. Here the color palette keeps pace with the inspiration captured in the field design. From its honeysuckle center, tones of burnished ochre, cordovan, tobacco, and dusty rose intermediate between the main expanses of celadon, terracotta, and golden flax. In between, a range of blues expertly balances the entire spectrum. The unfettered brilliance of this rug, along with its specifically longer length, suggests it may have been commissioned by an important patron of a well-known family workshop. If so, it would have been their magnum opus.
